Groveside Cemetery was officially named for a parcel of land containing five acres, more or less, in the South part of Lot 25, Concession 5, Whitby Township as described in an Indenture executed on September 9th, 1874. The Indenture names Stephen Mead Thomas and Phoebe Thomas, his wife, as owners and James Benjamin Bickell, John Dryden and Henry Betts Taylor as advising Trustees. |
| The first burial to take place in Groveside was that of the late Mrs. Nancy Holt in the spring of 1874.
Owing to a lapse in following up and indifference of the heirs of the original Owners, the condition of Groveside Cemetery slid into a deplorable state as to the topographical condition, lack of proper financing and management, the Whitby Township Council took over the cemetery late in 1942. |
